Wartime regulations meant that nearly all of Bridgestone's output would go to the Japanese war effort. Īfter increasing production and development of tire technology in the early and mid 1930s, Bridgestone faced a more challenging environment in the years of world war 2. At the time Japan had no domestic production of tires for motor passenger vehicles. The founder, Shojiro Ishibashi, was previously experienced in the manufacture and design of rubber shoes and this may have provided the skills and knowledge that allowed him to move into the rubber tire market. The founder's surname has the meaning in Japanese that is "stone bridge" and it was changed to the English Bridgestone at the company's founding. It has claimed to be the largest tire and rubber manufacturer and while this is a difficult measure to quantify there can be no question of their large capacity, global reach and brand presence. Bridgestone is an international tire manufacturer that was founded in 1931 by Shojiro Ishibashi.
